About the AuthorI'm a zoologist, author and presenter/on-screen expert. I've been fascinated by animals for as long as I can remember, an interest that led to a prize-winning, first class degree in zoology at the University of Wales, Bangor and a PhD in insect ecology at the University of Leeds. I'm currently a visiting research fellow at the University of Leeds and a visiting fellow at the University of Essex. As well as observing and studying the animals I can find here in the UK I've travelled widely in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Southeast Asia, ever searching for interesting and elusive beasts. I'm enthusiastic to share my fascination for the incredible living things that surround us with anyone who will listen. I have recently returned from an expedition to Burma with the BBC Natural History Unit as a presenter, the product of which will be broadcast as a three part series on BBC 2 sometime towards the end of 2013. Other television projects include a BBC Children's Natural History Unit series that I've already done some filming for. See my website for more stuff, including my blog:

Editorial Review“Dr. Piper sets out the astounding panoply of the world’s fauna.” (The Wall Street Journal) “The book’s main draw is its striking images, capturing the iridescent eyes of mantis shrimps . . . a brilliantly multicoloured Persian carpet flatworm, sea slugs . . . that look more like sculptures than living organisms, and sinister wasp close-ups that will both haunt readers and draw them back for more.” (Publishers Weekly) “With vivid, prismatic photos, zoologist Piper offers encounters with dozens of improbable-looking but beautiful organisms you’ve never heard of―many of them microscopic or marine.” (Entertainment Weekly)
