Book DescriptionEleanor was the youngest of three surviving Marx children. She was the only one to be born, live, love, work and die in England and to become a public figure in her own right. Yvonne Kapp, in this highly acclaimed biography, brilliantly succeeds in capturing Eleanor's spirit, from a lively child, opining on the world's affairs, to the new woman, aspiring to the stage, earning her living as a free intellectual, and helping to lead England's unskilled workers at the height of the new unionism; being always more than, yet at the same time inescapably, Karl Marx's daughter. And so inevitably and fortunately Eleanor's biography is also an unrivalled biography of the Marx household in Victorian London, of the Marx circle, and especially of Friedrich Engels, the family's extraordinary mentor.
Editorial ReviewAnyone interested in Marx, the history of Socialism, women's emancipation or Victorian Britain will find the book difficult to put down.... The century's most talented photographers, illustrators and a rtists have contributed to it. In Lee Miller it had, unexpectedly, its own war photographer; in Norman Parkinson, Cecil Beaton, David Bailey, Snowdon and Mario Testino the greatest portrait and fashion photographers of their generation; and in Beaton and Irving Penn two giants of twentieth - century photography. From 1892, American Vogue chronicled the life of beautiful people - their clothes, parties, houses and habits - and the magazine was exported for intrigued British readers. In 1916, when the First Wo rld War made trans atlantic shipments impossible, its proprietor, Conde Nast, authorised a British edition. It was an immediate success, and over the following ten decades of uninterrupted publication continued to mirror its times - the austerity and optimi sm that followed two world wars, the `Swinging London' scene of the sixties, the radical seventies, the image - conscious eighties - and in its second century remains at the cutting edge of photography and design. Decade by decade, Vogue 100 : A Century of St yle celebrates the greatest moments in fashion, beauty and portrait photography. Illustrated throughout with well - known images, as well as th e less familiar and recently rediscovered, the book focuses on the faces that shaped the cultural landscape: from Matisse to Bacon, Freud and Hirst, from Dietrich to Paltrow, from Fred Astaire to David Beckham, from Lady Diana Cooper to Lady Diana Spencer. It features the fashion designers who defined the century - Dior , Galliano , Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, McQueen - and explores more broadly the changing form of the twentieth - century woman. 304 21 N27505849A WECAT-52486 9781855147553 14398 books 9781855147553 9781855147553 Howard Hodgkin: Absent Friends Paul Moorhouse Art, Architecture & Photography Art Subjects/Portraits Hardcover English 1855147556 Absent Friends National Portrait Gallery Publications 25/Apr/17 Hodgkin's art can be seen as providing memorials for people, many of whom are friends, whose absence is countered by th e corresponding physical presence of particular paintings. Descriptive elements visible in his earlier portraits from the 1950s are subsumed within paintings that have, over the course of more than fifty years, become more psychologically charged, but no l ess connected with evoking specific individuals in particular situations. This book, like the exhibition it accompanies, surveys the development of Hodgkin's portraiture from its beginnings in 1949 to the present, including new paintings. Comprising key works from a range of international public and private collections, it traces the evolution of the artist's visual language and his engagement with a range of friends and others within the artist's circle. Exhibition curator Paul Moorhouse provides a compe lling introduction to Hodgkin's portraits, his subjects, working methods, the role of memory, and his distinctive approach to representing people. Peter Blake, Stephen Buckley, Patrick Caulfield, David Hockney, Philip King, R . B . Kitaj and Richard Smith are among the many leading artists portrayed, so that the British art world emerges as the wider subject of Hodgkin's art. The book also contains a fully illustrated chronology and commentaries on individual work Exploding with an extraordinarily vast and experimental colour palette, the carefully constructed portraits ... at a glance certainly look abstract. But on closer inspection, despite a lack of figurative representation, each have a clear subject and evoke the sense of a person or situation as remembered by the painter and hinted at to the world via his art.--Sarah Bradbury Howard The Up Coming " Challenging our perceptions of what we even consider a portrait, yet also resisting what many misunderstand to be abstract art, Hodgkin's pieces, spanning a 60-year period, explore a language of representation that captures the "emotional response and feeling of memory when we encounter someone, not just the physical experience"--Sarah Bradbury Howard "The Up Coming " Psychologically charged, autobiographical and enigmatic, here are the moments of a life caught up in the collection of portraits: the ultimate memoir of a brilliant artist.--Sarah Bradbury Howard "The Up Coming " It's a sonorous, lovingly curated moment that reminds us just how few artists can touch Hodgkin on use of colour.--Katie McCabe "Time Out London " We've got the very first painting he ever made, and the last painting he made, and so the entire career is now framed.--Paul Moorhouse, Curator "The Guardian " [Hodgkin takes] painting in a new direction, not completely abstract, nor wholly figurative, but somewhere in between...inside the mind and painted consciousness.--Will Gompertz "BBC News " It's full of joy, it's full of happiness, it's full of golden memories and he was someone who really enjoyed the experience of being alive and wanted to celebrate it in painting.--Paul Moorhouse, Curator "Daily Mail " The late artist Howard Hodgkin worked in adventurous abstract realms but he always used real subject matter as his starting point, as this illuminating collection of his portraits shows.--Matthew Collings "The Evening Standard " A wonderful send-off for the man who made colour sing from the canvas.--Mark Hudson "The Daily Telegraph " [The paintings'] tactile richness should just burn into eyes and minds, leaving a trace behind the eyelids, a memory to which we can return. Their energy is enormous, their beauty intense.--Jenny Uglow "New York Review of Books "
