Hydrometer (1000 - 1100)

Hydrometer is the name given to the measuring instrument used to measure the specific gravity of liquids. The hydrometer, made of glass, has a weight at one end to keep it upright in the liquid, and a cylindrical handle at the other end. The liquid to be measured is placed in a long thin container, then the hydrometer is slowly dropped into this container so that it floats freely. The value at the level of the scale in contact with the liquid surface gives the specific gravity of the liquid in g/cm3. The device references pure water with 1,000 g/ml; penetrates deeper in light liquids such as gasoline, gas and cologne; It increases in dense liquids such as milk, salt water and acid. Different hydrometers are generally used for light and dense liquids; For light liquids the scale ends at 1,000, while for dense liquids it starts at 1,000.
