Book Description | Tawfiq Al-Hakim envisions that the National Theater will be dedicated to presenting the Egyptian theater heritage throughout the year so that this heritage remains alive and present. Just as museums preserve historical antiquities, the National Theater must preserve theatrical antiquities. Years passed and Tawfiq al-Hakim passed away, and the problem became not only that his theatrical legacy did not remain alive on stage, but also that it was not available even as a printed text. A former Arab Minister of Culture complained to me that he searched in libraries during his visit to Cairo for a number of al-Hakim’s plays to complete his collection. He was told that it had run out and had not been reprinted for years. From there, I was happy for the Dar Al-Shorouk project to republish the complete works of the father of Arab theater, Tawfiq Al-Hakim. Nations do not grow or prosper except to the extent that their heritage is present in their present, otherwise their contract is broken and they lose both their past and their future, in history and politics, as well as in literature and the arts. |
