Wood varnish is a clear, protective coating used to polish and protect a wood surface. Varnish is made up of chemical compounds that harden when exposed to air, creating a hard, wear-resistant layer on the wood. Varnish enhances the appearance of the wood and brings out its natural colors and textures. It also protects the wood surface from moisture, stains, and everyday scratches. If you decide to go ahead and apply a new varnish over the old varnish, make sure the existing varnish is free of scratches and gently sand the old varnish with 120-grit sandpaper and wipe off any dust. This will ensure that the new varnish has a good bond to interior wood surfaces: ideal for improving the appearance of interior wood items such as doors, windows, and furniture.
