It is a coniferous tree species from the Cypress family tree (Cupressaceae). It is native to the coastal mountains of California and Oregon. The trees of this species reach enormous sizes and live up to about 2,00 years. They are the tallest trees living today. The tallest specimen, named Hyperion, was 115.85 m high and 4.84 m in diameter. Its high, straight and relatively narrow trunk can reach a diameter of more than 7 m near the base !! The leaves are short and flattened or very small and resemble scales in some places. Evergreen sequoia is endemic to the coast of northern California and southwest Oregon. Most often it grows below 300 m above sea level, occasionally up to 100 m above sea level. It creates single-species or mixed coniferous forests, occurring, for example, with green fir or Lawson's cypress. Wood of this species is highly valued for its resistance to rot. It also has ornamental properties and is suitable for a mild, even climate without extreme heat or cold in USDA hardiness zones 7 through 9. It tolerates frosts down to -17.8 degrees C.
