A radius gauge is a hand-held tool with many precise rounded curves (radius) machined into its edges.

A radius gauge is also known as a radius pocket knife.

Radius gauges are commercially available as small steel sheets assembled in a design mounted inside a steel shield (gauge sets) or as single gauges that accommodate a wide range of diameters.

The single gauge in the image above has five measuring surfaces and is usually stored in a box or case.

What do we mean by radius?

A concave or convex radius can be measured with a radius gauge.

A concave radius curves inward.

Radius gauges must measure objects that include rounded inner or outer edges as part of their design. This requires the tool to have the ability to measure inside (concave) and outside (convex).

The profile gauge differs from other gauges because it has a variety of profiles machined in different positions to best fit its edges.
