Trachelospermum jasminoides, commonly known as Star Jasmine, is not actually part of the jasmine family, although it does have a similar look. This vigorous evergreen climber is the ideal plant for providing a year-round screen of attractive glossy leaves on woody, twining stems. From mid-summer onwards, it bursts into bloom with clusters of pretty star-like flowers which have a delicate, sweet fragrance - perfect for growing next to a seating area where the perfume can be appreciated on warm summer evenings. This easy-to-grow climber has a relatively unfussy nature, thriving in most conditions. During autumn, you will be rewarded with another burst of colour from the foliage, which turns to a deep red and bronze. Plant straight outside during mild conditions. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in sun or semi-shade. In particularly cold areas, grow in patio containers filled with a loam-based compost. Provide with an appropriate support such as trellis, wires, pergola or arch. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. After flowering, reduce the stems to restrict to the available space. Mature size: up to 8m x 8m after 5-10 years (this can be classed as relatively slow growing).
