DIRECT SOWING For early sowings, ensure the soil is warm enough before sowing otherwise the seeds may rot. To sow, draw out a drill with a hoe or forefinger. If the soil is dry, now is a good time to carefully add some water to the drill hollow. Avoid wetting any other areas other than the hollow so that slugs are less attracted.Carrot seeds are a little fiddly to sow because of their small size. Aim for about 5 seeds per 1cm. After sowing cover the seeds with dry soil. To ensure the seeds are in contact with the soil rather than an air pockets pat down the newly sown area with the back of a spade or your hand.If a good amount of water was added to the hollow before sowing, there will be no need to water again for a further 7 days. Seeds sown in containers may however need watering again sooner. If however water was not added before sowing, water the surface directly above the sown area, keeping as much of the surrounding soil as dry as possible.Cover early sowings with horticultural fleece until growth becomes strong.FURTHER GROWING INSTRUCTIONS Sowing instructions on the packet. Care should be taken when handling seeds. Some may be harmful if eaten, some may cause irritation to skin.
