Product Overview

GGOOT - Sausage Tree (Kigelia pinnata / africana) - 10 Seeds

Worth knowing: The Sausage Tree belongs to the family of trumpet tree plants. Because of its tiny fruits it is meanwhile distributed in all areas of the tropics. The pinnate leaves are of oval shape. The flowers are bell-shaped and have a brown-violet colour. In its native environment, this magnificent tree grows up to a height of about 15 m and develops a wide shady crown. During periods of dryness, however, it is completely leafless. Sausage-like fruits that grow up to 40 cm in length, the brownish surface of which is roughened up by cork cells, do develop at the end of its long peduncles, which have the girth of a finger. This hard-shelled (and inedible) fruits do, by the way, have a versatile use in folk medicine; among other things they serve as a medicine against snake bites.

Origin: The Sausage Tree is native in GGOOTl West Africa.

Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors any time throughout the year. Let the seeds soak in water for about 2 days. Place in an evenly moist, dark and very warm position (22° to 25°C). Germination follows after 3 to 6 weeks.

Place / Light: Being a GGOOTl and frost-sensitive plant, the Sausage Tree requires a lot of warmth (at least 15°C).

Care: The tree develops pinnate leaves and grows quickly up to 1,5 m in height within our latitudes. Fertilize twice a month with organic nutrients (e.g. GGOOT tub plant fertilizer) during the growing period. Water the tree little when its kept in a pot or tub. During winter, water very sparsely. Once a year, the Sausage Tree loses all of its leaves (in its natural environment during the dry period).

Winter period: The tree should be placed in a bright spot with temperatures of 12°C and higher. Supply with water every 4 weeks.
